How do I coupon?

I've received some emails and often get questions in the store on how I find all of my coupons and how I save so much money.

Step #1 - Buy all of your local papers that get coupon inserts in the Sunday paper. The Washington Post is the only paper by me that does so I have Sunday delivery only. On Sunday, my daughter and I walk to the paper box, I take the coupons and sale ads out and get rid of the rest of the paper.

Step #2 - I clip ALL of the coupons from the coupon insert.

Step #3 - I have a 3 ring note book set up for storing my coupons. I have 27 page protectors that I've labeled A-Z. I put each coupon in the corresponding slot. For example; a Crest toothpaste coupon goes under C for Crest. Every 2 weeks I go through my notebook and pull out all of the expired coupons.

When I need to go shopping:

I make a list of everything we NEED (milk, bread, chicken, etc.). On the back of the list I write down the extra things that we WANT (chocolate milk, apple pie, etc.).
Next, I look at the sale ad for the store I will be visiting (typically Food Lion). I note the sale price of anything on my list. For example, if we needed toothpaste, I will write toothpaste on the list. Let's say Food Lion has Crest on sale for $2/4, I will write down the sale price on my list.
I go through my book of coupons and pull out all of the ones I will use at my shopping trip.
If I have a coupon for something that is on sale, I will mark a "C" on the list by the item. Let's go back to the Crest example. Food Lion has it on sale for $2/4 and I have one $0.75 off/1 Crest toothpaste coupon, my list will look like this: Toothpaste - Crest $2/4 - C - buy 1.
When I am done looking through my coupons I go to my computer and visit www. google.com and look for printable coupons. Back to the Crest example, if I did not have a coupon from my coupon stash, I would search "Crest printable coupon" on Google and see what I could find.

Yes, it seems like a long process but it doesn't really take that long at all. I spend about 30 minutes every 2-3 weeks making my grocery list. My husband thinks I'm insane but he never complains when I should him how much money I could have spent versus what I actually spent.

I found a Food Lion glitch

I'm not sure if this is happening at every store but it happened to me.

I took these coupons from the Food Lion website when I went shopping on Sunday. The coupons include $1 off FL brand cereal, $1 off Home360 purchase, $1 off Healthy Accents purchase, and $2 off Food Lion green tea 12 pack.

I already tossed my receipt, so I can't give you exact figures but I purchased the following:

Home360 flushable wipes (42 count) = $1.99 roughly** (-$1 coupon = $0.99)
FL Magic Stars cereal = $2.74 sale price (-$1 coupon = $1.74)
Healthy Accents liquid soap = $1.19 roughly (-$1 coupon = $0.19)
plus other things we needed like Gatorade and lunch meat.

**I bought these wipes to go in my diaper bag. First I looked in the baby aisle. The Home360 baby wipes was also a 42 count and they were priced right around $2.30. The Home360 flushable wipes are the same thing except the package doesn't say "baby" on it and it was $0.30-$0.40 cheaper.

At checkout I handed the cashier the sheet of coupons and told her that I did not use the Green Tea coupon. She scanned all 4 coupons (a total of $5 off) and all 4 took. The Green Tea coupon came off of my total even though I did not purchase it. I didn't notice this until I got home and was reviewing my receipt.

Food Lion Transaction: 6/29/09

It was bi-weekly grocery time!

I purchased 43 items last night. A few items were splurges like $2 for 4th of July sparklers and Ben & Jerry's ice cream (and they were on sale and I had a coupon!!) And I also had to purchase fresh produce since we were completely out. I picked up some peaches, grapes, bananas, limes, and strawberries and used my $2 off of $5+ produce purchase coupon.

Subtotal was $127.13
less $10.55 in coupons
less $33.47 in MVP savings
For a grand total of $83.11 out of pocket which breaks down to $1.93/item
According to my (not-so-good) math calculations, I saved 34.63%!

My favorite deals include:

All 2x laundry detergent that is on BOGOF sale and I had a $1/2 coupon which brought my total to $4.40 for both bottles (or $2.20 per bottle). The regular price is $5.40 each.
Bob Evans sausage that was marked down to $1.99 because of the sell-by date. I paired it with a $0.25 coupon for a grand total of $1.74. Regular price is $3.99
Mama Lucia meatballs (found in the freezer section) are BOGOF which comes to $6.49/2 or $3.25 each.
Food Lion bacon is on sale for 2/$5 (regular price is 2/$5.78) and I had a $1 coupon. So each pack cost me $2.
Ben & Jerry's ice cream is on sale for 2/$6 (regular 2/$8.38) and I had a $1 coupon.

Here is a meal idea: I picked up some chili sauce and grape jelly to make sweet and sour meatballs. For dinner tonight, I will use the chili sauce ($2.12), the grape jelly ($1.88), and one bag of meatballs ($3.25) then I will serve it over rice (unknown cost, already had in stock) with a side of green beans ($0.69) . This comes out to a cost of about $2.65 per person plus I know there will be leftovers for my lunch tomorrow.

I blew my target budget of $50 but I purchased a lot of things I didn't intend to purchase originally such as the meatballs, jelly, chili sauce, sparklers, Crunch N Munch (per hubby's request), pretzels (per daughter's request), cookies (hubby's request), and muffins (my guilty pleasure).

All in all, a great trip.

Bubba's Belly Run

I'd like to take a moment to ask my loyal readers to consider donating to Bubba's Belly Run. A lady, Nicki, from one of my local mothers group lost her husband, "Bubba", in Afghanistan. Bubba leaves behind his pregnant wife and his 2 year old son. Bubba was killed in Afghanistan just days after his 2 week R&R at home. When Bubba died, he did not know that his wife was pregnant. She did not learn that she was pregnant until several days after the news of Bubba's death.

In his memory and honor, Bubba's Belly Run has begun. The proceeds of this charity will go to Flat Daddies, The Ficher House, The American Widow Project, and Bubba's children's educations.

Why it's frugal to donate

Do you have clothes that you want to get rid of but don't want to deal with selling them, yardsaling, or storing them somewhere?

Do you have books that you don't know what to do with but you are tired of looking at them?

How about food you bought but don't like and won't ever use?

Then donate them!

Take them to places that will give you a receipt so you can deduct the value off of your taxes at the end of the year. Call places like Purple Heart that will come pick your items up. If you've got a vehicle to get rid of, call Vehicles for Change. Take the items to thrift stores and churches.

Why is this frugal?

1. You are giving other people the opportunity to purchase items at a lower cost to them. Many of your items end up at thrift stores or are donated to less fortunate people.
2. You aren't wasting your precious time sitting at a yardsale waiting for people to come buy your stuff. Only to have most of your items go unpurchased and back into your house.
3. You get the cash in your hand after you do your taxes and didn't really have to work for it.

Just remember to keep all of your donation receipts in the event that you get audited!

These make great filler products so you can make the best of your RR's.

Buy one, get one free - Kraft Easy Mac cups. They were on sale for $1. So I got 2 for $1.
Pillsbury Brownies rang up for $1.86/each. I purchased 2 and used a $1/2 coupon. Then further down on my receipt it says "SC Pills fdg bro 1.72-" So I believe I got both boxes for $1.00.
Eastern Peaches were on sale for $0.99/lb. That's over half off. I loaded up and I'll make a peach cobbler this weekend for Father's Day.

The only things I purchased that weren't on sale or I didn't have a coupon for were:

I could go back and get 2 lotions and 2 body washes but I'm afraid I won't end up using the body wash or the lotion. I plan on giving the lotion I bought today to my mom since she uses it. I could go back and get 2 lotions and give them to my mom and get 2 body washes and give them to my sister.

So let me work this scenario out.

My husband told me this morning that he needed more Gold Bond powder. And I remember seeing it in the CVS circular.

So I plan on buying:

2 4oz+ Gold Bond powders which will earn $3ECB.
1 pack of pull ups on sale for $8.99 - $2 coupon received yesterday = $6.99

Unfortunately, I won't save the most amount of money doing it this way. I've got some ECB's to spend but I'm debating on spending them or waiting until next weeks circular.

So now I'm off to find some Gold Bond printable coupons.

Shelley's Money Saving Tips

Here are some ways I save money.

First and foremost - clip and print coupons. It only takes a little while to do. Get your local Sunday paper and get the grocery coupons from it. Go to Google.com and type in printable coupons... you will find tons. Look to the side here for some links to various places you can print coupons. Check your mail! I get Red Plum coupons in my mail on Tuesday's.

Only buy what you really need. Do you really need 4 different shades of purple eye shadow? No. So don't buy it. UNLESS... it's on a super sale and/or you have a coupon. For example if you use Maybelline eye shadow and CVS has it for buy one, get one free and you have a coupon to go on top of that, by all means buy it and stockpile [see below].

Eat before you grocery shop. If you go to the store hungry, you WILL buy more.

Stockpile when the sale is good. If you can get something you use constantly for a cheap price after sales and coupons, then buy a lot and store it. For example, if Kraft dressing is on sale for $1.67 and you have $1.50 Kraft coupons, then buy A LOT and store them in your pantry.

Buy in bulk. I love BJ's Wholesale. I love the savings. I love the fact that they taken manufacturers coupons and send our their own coupons that you can use together. For example, I recently bought a box of Luvs diapers. They are priced at $29.99. I had a $5 BJ's coupon for Luvs diapers and a $1 manufacturers coupon. So I only paid $23.99 for a giant box of diapers. There are 180 diapers in the box so I paid $0.13 per diaper.

Buy the store brand when the national brand isn't on sale. On average I notice that the store brand is at least $0.20 cheaper and usually tastes just as good or better than the national brand. For example, my family prefers the taste of the Food Lion brand premium mac n cheese over the Velveeta brand.

Buy frozen veggies instead of fresh. Did you also know that frozen veggies can be more nutritious than fresh veggies (unless you pick them from your own garden)? The longer a fresh veggie sits out, the more vitamins it loses. And typically, pound for pound, frozen veggies are cheaper. And don't get me started on canned veggies. They are probably the cheapest out there but they are loaded with extra salts and sugars. The only canned veggie I buy is green beans and that's because my husband is picky.

Sign up with manufacturers. Often times if you sign up on manufacturers websites they will mail and email coupons to you.

Sign up with your favorite chain restaurants. Just like manufacturers, they will often send you coupons. Arby's is famous for emailing coupons.

Sign up with your grocery stores. Same concept at manufactures, they will send you coupons!

Food Lion Transaction - 5/3/09

With the help of The Grocery Game (if you sign up, use me as your referral - shelley_hall@comcast.net), coupons, and my trusty Food Lion weekly circular I saved a buttload of money yesterday. Early Sunday morning I logged onto The Grocery Game and printed my list of items I needed, went digging through my coupons, printed online coupons, and checked out the weekly circular. Then I made my list of things we needed. With my list, my coupons, and my MVP card, I went shopping.

I purchased 83 items. Only TWO items we not on sale or I didn't have coupons for them. Those two items were milk and bananas. (I must stock up on bananas, my daughter eats at least 2 a day.) Even my meats were marked down! Their sell by dates were coming up, so they were discounted. I'm OK with buying meat like that because I take it home and freeze it anyway. It's not like I'm letting it sit in the fridge for another week or so before I use it. So here's the breakdown:

83 items purchased
MVP savings: $42.40
Coupons tendered: $56.63
Total out of pocket: $146.89

So if I am calculating right, I saved about 40% buying MVP sale items and using my coupons.

The lady in line behind me was totally blown away. Totally impressed with me and even "bowed down" to me. It felt awesome. My husband was even impressed when I got home and told him about my savings. I told him he's not allowed to make fun of my coupon notebook anymore.

BJ's vs Target: a price comparison

In reading another blog, I thought I would share my 2 cents on saving money with national brands and wholesale stores.

I frequently shop at BJ's because we use a lot of diapers, wipes, Gatorade, etc. Here are some breakdowns on saving comparisons.

Product: Luvs Diapers, size 4
Price @ BJ's - $29.99 for 180 diapers (price per diaper $0.17)
Price @ Target - $38.99 for 180 diapers (price per diaper $0.22)
Savings of $9 per case/$0.05 per diaper

Scenario:
Let's estimate that you use 1 case of diapers a month. By purchasing Luvs at BJ's you will save $108 a year. And even by deducting the $40 membership cost, you still save $68 a year (assuming you only buy diapers at BJ's)! (Personally, we use about 1.5 cases of diapers a month.)
